How to play

  1. Read the career path. Years on the left, clubs on the right, loans marked. A move from a Dutch academy club to the Premier League at 19 already narrows it down.
  2. Guess a player. Start typing and pick a name from the list (636 players). Even a wrong guess helps: you see whether the nation, position and birth year match and which clubs he shares with the answer.
  3. Use the clues. Miss once and the position appears; then the nationality, the birth year, appearances and goals per club, and finally the initials.
  4. Share your grid. Your result copies as squares only, with your level and streak — no spoilers for friends who haven't played.

How to read a career path like a scout

  • The first club and year tell you where he came through and roughly how old he is — most players start their senior career between 17 and 20.
  • Loans usually mean a young player at a big club, or a veteran winding down. A string of loans from one club points to its academy.
  • Big moves stand out: a jump from Portugal or the Netherlands to England, Spain or Germany often marks a record transfer you'll remember.
  • The last line with an open year (“2023–”) is his current club — Saudi Arabia and MLS are common late-career stops.
  • Use wrong guesses on purpose. Guessing a player from a club in the path tests the nation, position and age in one go.

About the data

Every career path is built from Wikidata (public domain, CC0): the “member of sports team” statements with their start and end years, appearances and goals. We keep senior club spells only, merge a loan that turned into a permanent move, and drop players whose record has gaps — so you only get paths that start by age 21 and run without missing seasons. Club names are shortened to how fans say them (“Barcelona”, not “Futbol Club Barcelona”). There are no player photos or club crests on this page.

Questions people ask

How do you play Guess the Player?

You see a footballer's senior career path — every club and the years he was there, loans marked. Type a name and pick it from the list. You have 6 guesses. Every wrong guess unlocks one more clue (position, nationality, birth year, appearances and goals, initials) and shows how close you were: same nation or continent, same position, birth year with ↑↓, and the clubs your guess shares with the answer.

When is the new player?

Every day at 00:00 UTC, the same player for everyone, so you can compare results. A countdown shows when the next one drops.

What do Easy, Hard and Very Hard mean?

The level comes from how famous the player is, measured by how many Wikipedia language editions have an article about him. The best-known 70 players are Easy, the next 100 Hard, and the rest — still well-known internationals — Very Hard. The daily player comes from the top 260; unlimited mode can serve any of the 636, and has a Very Hard only button.

Which players are in the game?

636 well-known footballers born in 1976 or later, men's senior club football only. Youth, reserve and national teams are left out so the path reads like the graphics you see on X and TV. Back-to-back spells at one club (a loan turned permanent) are merged into one line.

Where does the data come from — and why no photos?

Career paths, positions, nationalities and birth years come from Wikidata, which is free to reuse (CC0). We don't show player photos or club badges; the mystery player is a plain silhouette, so nothing is copied from rights holders. Wikidata is edited by volunteers, so a season or appearance count can occasionally be off — tell us and we'll fix it.

How does the share grid avoid spoilers?

Each guess becomes four squares — nation, position, birth year, clubs — in green (match), yellow (close) or black, with ⚽ on the right answer. Friends see how you got there, not who it was.
