How to play

  1. Look at both photos. They show the same thing on purpose, so you can't guess from the subject — compare the details instead.
  2. Tap the one you think is real. There's no timer; zoom in on your phone if you like.
  3. Read the tell. We point out what gives the AI image away in that pair — the habit you build here works on your social feed too.
  4. Share your score. Your result copies as squares only (🟩 spotted, ⬛ fooled), with your streak.

How to spot an AI image: a quick checklist

  • Text and signs. Shop signs, labels and number plates that look like letters but don't spell anything are still the clearest giveaway.
  • Too-regular patterns. Real leaves, seeds, bricks and tiles vary; AI often repeats the same shape or spaces things too evenly.
  • Light without a source. Check that shadows fall the same way and that reflections match what is above them.
  • Melting edges. Where two things meet — fur and grass, a spoon and a cup, a branch and the sky — AI blends; a camera keeps a clean edge or a natural blur.
  • Too clean, too perfect. Real photos have dust, crumbs, noise, an awkward crop or a boring corner. Glossy, evenly sharp, oversaturated scenes lean AI.
  • Background logic. Look past the subject: railings that stop, windows of different sizes, trees growing out of roofs.

Questions people ask

How does the Real or AI game work?

Every day at 00:00 UTC everyone gets the same 5 pairs. Both photos in a pair show the same subject — a fox, a bowl of ramen, a lighthouse. One is a real photograph, the other was made by an AI image generator. Tap the one you think is real. After each pick we show which was which and the detail that gives the AI image away.

Where do the real photos come from?

From Wikimedia Commons, and only files released under CC0 or in the public domain, so they can be reused freely. Each pair links to the original file page with its license. We only resize and crop them to the same 4:3 frame; we don't retouch them.

How were the AI images made?

With ChatGPT's image generator, by Rarest Answer. We describe the same subject and setting as the real photo and ask for an ordinary, natural-light photo with no text or people, then crop it to the same frame. We don't pick the worst ones on purpose — some are genuinely hard.

Can I cheat by looking at the file name or metadata?

No. Both images get random file names, the same size and format, and all metadata (EXIF, camera model, generator tags) is stripped. You have to use your eyes.

What are the most reliable signs of an AI image?

Text and signs that don't spell anything, repeated patterns that are too regular (leaves, bricks, sesame seeds), lighting with no clear source, edges that melt into each other, and a "too perfect" finish — every surface sharp and saturated with no noise, dust or clutter. Real photos usually have something boring or imperfect in them.

Is there a text version?

Yes: in Human or AI? you see four trivia answers — three typed by real players, one written by an AI — and pick the bot.
